A lifeguard’s main duty is to maintain a safe environment around water, whether that be at a pool, lake, water park, or ocean. Lifeguards are respectable individuals who have been trained and certified to save lives and properly administer AED, CPR and First Aid.

Swim Instruction at Five Star Swim School

In order to become a lifeguard, one must first complete a swimming pre-test to demonstrate that they are capable to proceed with certification. Once the pre-test is complete the potential lifeguard will go through many hours of training where they learn how to recognize and respond to various situations in and out of the water. Some training drills include swimming continuous laps for 300 yards, surface diving to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 pound weight, and treading water for 2 minutes. Soon-to-be lifeguards will also learn and practice different lifesaving techniques. Finally, two written tests must be passed with a score of at least 80%.

If you enjoy swimming and spending time around water, lifeguarding would make a great job for you. Being a lifeguard builds character and looks excellent on your resume. Lifeguarding is thought to be a summer job, but there are in fact many facilities with indoor pools, making it possible to have a secure lifeguard job year round.
